Exaggerated Beauty

Thursday, 12 May 2011

Bauwelt, German’s leading weekly building and architectural magazine published an article about the much discussed design and build for the University of Leipzig, a competition design won by Erick van Egeraat in 2004. Author Gunter Kowa describes the difficulties between Client and architect during the construction and gives insight on the design of the building’s exterior and interior of which Erick van Egeraat says: “I have exaggerated ‘beauty’ so to speak”.

The building is situated on the site of the former Pauliner Church, the only church to remain undamaged during the war, yet later demolished in 1968 during the former GDR regime. The Aula of the building is contemporary interpretation of the former University Church, a multifunctional space which will be used – like the original church – for church services as well as for academic ceremonies, concerts and scientific conferences.
