Making affordable housing more attractive
Friday, 6 November 2015Erick van Egeraat, architect and director of the Dutch Bureau of Design Erick van Egeraat, recalls: “I started my career with a project to improve housing affordability. Our work has been so successful and popular that at one point it turned out that my team and I have designed 30% of all residential projects in Rotterdam, making affordable housing more attractive, effective and practical, and where possible – more spacious and differentiated. It was all quite unlike the mass residential development on the principle of “one solution for all”, which was the norm until the 1980s. I can proudly say that we are over the years transformed the residential construction industry in the Netherlands, led her to a more mature state. Our projects have attracted attention from around the world, since they do not require large expenditures or overvaluation, they just improved residential apartments, making them more suitable for a variety of housing solutions which people finally dared to ask.”
