The Dutch solicitors firm Simmons & Simmons Trenité relocated to the 6th floor of a prominent 1980’s office development in the heart of Rotterdam’s commercial centre. The commission was to transform the entire entrance floor, approximately 820m2, into an interesting environment for visitors and staff. The main design aim was to create a spatial generosity and friendly ambience within the reception, lounge, meeting and conference area. This was achieved by installing backlit glass elements, flush glazed doors and panels to the meeting rooms and indirectly lighting the ceilings. Materials were chosen to support a welcoming environment; differing light shades of natural stone, ceiling fabrics and high brightening (glossy) Venetian plaster are combined with a framing dark timber floor. The brief included two bespoke furniture items; a conference table and reception desk for the entrance area. The organic form of the new reception desk, constructed of timber and acrylic, has become a defining feature for the revitalised foyer. The conference table is designed to accommodate the client’s internal meetings as well as future international video conference meeting. In this way the design responds to the client’s requirements for both a modern and professional environment as well as creating a friendly and welcoming perception of the company.
