Erick van Egeraat presents alternative design for New National Gallery and Ludwig Museum in Budapest

In a lecture he held earlier this year in Budapest titled ‘Galvanise the City’, Erick van Egeraat fuelled the debate about the ongoing plans to erect 6 new museum projects in one of Budapest’s most appreciated city parks. Now, he presents Budapest with a pragmatic alternative for two museums that is more central, more cost effective, keeps the park intact, and rejuvenates one of the most prominent sites in the historical fabric of the capital city.

Erick van Egeraat, having designed and realized several key projects in Budapest since 1991, about the proposal: “It is our responsibility to keep improving the city. Budapest offers immense space within the existing fabric to do so, and I advise to maximize that potential instead of building in a park. In the city you concern yourself with buildings. In a park, you work with trees!”

Therefore Erick van Egeraat proposes, as a serious and effective alternative, to locate two museums within the City Hall project on a high potential site in the very city centre of Budapest.

This study proposes a convincing, financially feasible and suitable alternative museum location that dramatically improves the inner city, and protects the existing green parks. This proposal would use slightly modified existing plans, and need only existing infrastructure, it would solve real problems.
