Villa Jansen
Rotterdam, Netherlands

The client that requested a design for this private residence lived in a modernist villa for several years. For their new residence a more personal and intimate living environment was desired. The private residence is situated alongside a small canal in a semi rural area of Rotterdam. The design for this private residence finds a suitable balance between the request to create a relatively large amount of square meters, and the municipal plan to maintain a green and open character in the area. To achieve this, the volume is placed close to the canal, maximizing the distance between the residence and the street. This maintains the open and green character of the street, and secures a high level of privacy for the residents. The footprint and volume of the residence follow organic outlines, softening the frontal impact of the villa from all sides.

The villa is covered by a sculptural roof that provides a horizontal accentuation. The roof is both contemporary and vernacular, with reed covering and large cantilevers. The facades are decidedly contemporary with predominantly glazed, curved surfaces providing panoramic views to the gardens and surroundings. Erick van Egeraat also designed the interior and landscaped garden. With its vernacular, organic and landscape-integrated architecture, this private residence provides the client with a unique living environment. Its spaces and materials allow for a very comfortable and highly personal way of living in the city of Rotterdam.
