Construction on the Columbuskwartier mixed use project, designed by Erick van Egeraat, officially started on Wednesday 22 April 2015. During the groundbreaking ceremony, the first foundation pile touched the ground. The site is located between the Oliver van Noorthof and Amerigo Vesprutiweg, in a new district of the city of Almere in The Netherlands. The project combines different functions and a flexible use of spaces, including 29 unique apartments and retail spaces. A contemporary annex above the parking area will house 2 additional and unique loft apartments with a fantastic view.
Erick van Egeraat based his design on three principles: optimal positioning of building elements and outdoor space, clear logistic lines and a natural and comfortable environment.
The building is composed of shifting volumes stacked on top of each other that rise above a glass façade, giving it a distinct image.
In 2008 Erick van Egeraat and Bun project development commonly participated in a national tender for the development of a shopping centre in the Columbuskwartier area, organized by the Municipality of Almere. During the design selection not only the financial frameworks were found important, but also the sustainability and appearance of the design.
The project differentiates itself in a visible way by its form and its physical, economic and social sustainability. This sustainability appears in the choice and use of materials: recycled materials, certified sustainable wood and a green roof. Furthermore, the building has a high level of insulation and is due to its energy concept very energy efficient.
Due to its park-like appearance, the building is destined to become a green anchor in Almere Poort.
