Balluta Square & Apartments
St. Julians, Malta

The Balluta Pjazza, St. Julians, Malta, is part of the beautiful, historic, and iconic Balluta Bay. This triangular pjazza is shaded by Judas trees and surrounded by different cafes. Most notable of the pjazza are the art nouveau Balluta Buildings.

This design for the pjazza transforms the square into a public space of new quality: with improved shop fronts, 792 square metres of pedestrian areas – including a 7 metre wide walkaway in front of the Balluta building shops and cafes –, and an increase of 50% in terrace areas.

Not only does the design introduce a transformation for the square itself, the Balluta Building and its apartments deserve much needed attention, the shop fronts included. Of which a great part is clearing the façade of all existing elements like cables and ducts, visible air conditioning elements, etc. Repairing and cleaning the stone where needed, repairing the balustrade, and unifying the shop fronts with windows, doors, awnings, etc. in a similar style of design.
