Erick van Egeraat’s Waste to Energy plant wins first prize at the Architizer A+ Awards

Erick van Egeraat’s Waste to Energy Plant in Roskilde, Denmark has been awarded the first prize in the Architizer A+ Awards. The project, which is actually a state of the art Waste-to-Energy plant, was selected in the category Architecture + Light by 43,000 voters from over 100 countries as their favorite project. With this new Waste to Energy Plant, the city of Roskilde has received a second unique towering landmark, besides its already famous Roskilde Cathedral that is listed as World Heritage by Unesco.

The plant incinerates waste from nine surrounding municipalities and from several places abroad, to produce electricity and heat for households in the Roskilde region. The Energy Tower is designed by Erick van Egeraat, who gave the complex it’s iconic presence and pulsating lighting scheme which indicates the building’s active contributions to the environment. The lighting projects was further developed by the Danish Lighting Architect Gunver Hansen, who implemented the ideas using the most optimal lighting solutions. The result is a majestic glowing beacon, that reminds the visitors and the population of the region’s environmental achievements.

The Waste to Energy Plant was nominated in the category Architecture + Light. This category recognizing projects that deploy light in a substantive and innovative manner. An international Jury of over 300 industry leaders – including Iwan Baan, Sou Fujimoto, Bjarke Ingels, and Beatrice Galilee – selected the Jury winners for this years Architizer A+ Awards.
